In Our Lady and St Swithin we recognise the need to develop a love of reading from an early age. We develop and foster this by providing every opportunity for the children to read to each other, to their teacher and also independently every day. We also expect parents to read to and with their children each day and ask that reading books and reading record books are returned to school each day.
The development of reading is also developed through a daily Letters and Sounds session. We regularly assess and group children to ensure they are working at the correct level. In these sessions children learn the shape of letters and spelling patterns. They have the opportunity to read words and then apply this to writing.
Alongside Letters and Sounds, the children also have a daily English lesson. In Our Ladies and St Swithin, we follow the Liverpool Primary English plans. We immerse children in different genres of writing and then analyse the features before teaching them to apply this to their own writing. We ensure that opportunities to apply the skills are given each day across different curriculum areas.
Each week the children also receive guided reading, writing and grammar sessions.
Our home reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree and is supplemented with Collins Big Cat Phonics and Dandelion readers
