The area of English encompasses, speaking and listening, reading, grammar, spelling and writing.
In Our Lady and St Swithin we recognise the need for children to develop a love of reading from an early age. We develop and foster this through providing a wide range of texts for the children to read. Each day the children have opportunities to be heard read by peers or the class teacher whilst still having opportunities to read independently and listen to stories. In order to continue to foster a love of reading, we expect parents to read with their children each day. Please ensure that your children have their reading book and reading diary in school each day.
We follow the Liverpool primary plans for English. This provides children with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a certain genre of writing and then to analyse it's features. This enables them to be confident writers, using and applying what they have learnt.
With a greater emphasis on grammar and spelling, we provide opportunities to consolidate skills each day in a basic skills lesson. Teachers provide daily writing opportunities either through the English lesson or across curriculum areas. A wide range of stimuli; from imagery, video clips, music and discussion are used to give every opportunity for the children to apply their skills in all writing.
In Key Stage 2, we follow the Liverpool Spelling toolkit which enables children to consolidate their learning from Key Stage 1 and become confident spellers.
