Y5 Maths

Autumn
In maths this term we are learning about number and place value. We have looked at comparing and ordering numbers to one million, Rounding to the nearest 100 and counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s.

In maths we have been looking at decimals. We have been looking adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals, adding decimals with 1 and looking at money and subtracting two different amounts to find out what our change would be.

Year 5 have been learning how to multiply 2 digits by 1 digit numbers, multiplying 4 digit by 1 digit numbers and using the correct technique (Long multicapation) to to work these calculations out. We have also looked at how to divide 2 digit by 1 digit numbers and 3 digit by 1 digit numbers using the bus stop method.

Spring
In maths this term year 5 will be learning about measure. We will be working out the perimeter and area of different shapes. We will be covering different units of measures for example centimetres to metres, grams to kilograms. We will also be learning about positions of shapes, thinking about how angles are measured.

Year 5 are working on Fractions this term. They have been looking at equivalent fractions, fractions greater than 1, improper to mixed number fractions and compare and ordering fractions greater than 1. We have also been studying how to multiply mixed numbers by integers, fractions of different amounts and decimals as fractions.

In maths we have recapped rounding decimals and applied our knowledge to be able to order and compare decimals. We have also studied and gained a understanding of percentages.

Summer
In maths this term year 5 are looking at angles. We have identified angles (right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles), comparing and ordering different angles, measuring angles in degrees, calculating angles around a point and measuring with a protractor remembering to always line the point up.

In maths this term we are studying shape. We are looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We will be looking at the net of different shapes and how we build and put together there net. We have counted how many faces these shapes have and what different angles these shapes have within them.

In maths this term year 5 are learning how to read and plot different coordinates. We have looked at describing positions and drawing and marking points on a grid. Also we have learnt about translation and translations with coordinates looking at how many squares we move a shape either three places to the left and 2 up.

This term year 5 are learning about lines of symmetry, thinking about how many lines of symmetry a shape has, reflection – thinking about what a shape would look like if we were to have a mirror down the middle of the shape and completing a symmetric figure. We have drawn different shapes outside on the playground and got our partners to complete the shape we have drawn on the other side of the symmetry line.
