Y6 Science

2023/2024
Autumn
Autumn 1 – In science this term year 6 will be learning about living things and their habitats. Pupils will be describing how living things are classified looking at the scientist Carl Linnaeus and how he created the system taxonomy. Pupils will be looking at how animals for groups into groups (vertebrates and invertebrates) and observing characteristics and features these animals show. Pupils will be able to notice and talk about similarities and differences these animals have including micro-organisms and plants.
Autumn 2 – Pupils will be enhancing their knowledge and understanding of light. Pupils will be able to recognise that light appears to travel in a straight line. Will be able to explain why light travels in a straight line and that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into people’s eyes. Pupils will be able to explain how shadows are formed and how the shape of an object is the same and is casted.
Autumn 2022/2023
Autumn 1 – In science this term we have been learning about animals including humans. We have talked and performed how the circulatory system works, labelled what the different parts of the heart are and the effects that alcohol have on our body. We have investigated how to measure our heart after before and after we have exercised.
Autumn 2 – Year 6 are studying about Light. We have studied parts of the eye and labeled them.  We will be learning why light travels in straight line and how we are able to see light. We have looked at shadows and how they are formed. We have also explained how a periscope works.
Spring
In science this term we have been studying living things. We have developed our learning by researching and making a classifying key for arthropods. We have created our own fact file on Carl Linnaeus who developed a system for classifying organisms.
