Y4 English
2023/2024
Autumn 1 – This term Year 4 has been immersed in the book ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Dieckman. We have been looking at the beautiful illustrations and discovering the journey of Leaf as he tries to find his way home. We have been using our knowledge of the story to write our own ‘outsider’ narrative looking at language/layout features, the writing techniques that have been used (fronted adverbials). Year 4 have also been using expanded noun phrases to explain how leaf move and effective adjectives and verbs.
Autumn 2 – Year 4 have been exploring ‘the Whale’ by Ethan and Vita Murrow. The children have been looking at and discussing the atmospheric feel of the black and white pictures. Discussing the setting and the feelings of each of the characters. We have looked and researched different features included within a newspaper article to help us when it comes to us writing our own. We have enhance our learning on what subheading, captions, pictures and titles are and why they are used within newspapers.
Spring 1 – The book year 4 have been reading and immersing in is Arthur and The Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton. We have explored different ancient ancestors in Professor Brownstone’s vault. Pupils have travelled back in time to the age of the vikings and how to defeat the beast Fenrir. Pupils have researched key vocabulary from the model text, highlighted key language/layout features. All these features researched have helped us to be able to write our very own Myth Narrative and Instructional Guide.
Spring 2 – The book year 4 are exploring this half term is a book called ‘Manfish’ by Jennifer Berne. Pupils have dived in and learnt able Jacques Cousteau’s life as a child and how he loved to discover the underworld. Pupils have created their own invention narrative and a biography on the life of Jacques Cousteau’s.
