Welcome to Year 2!
My name is Miss Gloger and I am so happy to be teaching your children this year. In our class, I am joined by our wonderful teaching assistant, Miss Lee, and together we are excited to help your children learn, grow and shine. Year 2 is such an exciting stage in school, full of new challenges and achievements. Our aim is to create a warm, supportive and encouraging environment where every child feels confident, valued and inspired to do their best. We hope to nurture curiosity, develop independence and build resilience, while ensuring the children enjoy their learning journey. We are looking forward to a fantastic year of fun, progress and success!
Autumn 1 - This term in Art, we will be explored previously acquired skills. The children will use a range of marks to represent mood and movement. They will start to explore shape and texture through expressive mark making in response to a piece of music and descriptive language. We will explore the works of Beth Krommes as a starting point for our own artwork.
Autumn 1 - This term in PSHE, we will be exploring what makes a good friend. The children will learn to identify feelings of loneliness and what they can do when they or someone else feels lonely. We will look at the difference between good and bad secrets and learn to identify different types of hurtful behaviour. In conclusion, we will review what we have learned and identify trusted adults and friends and ways to seek help.
Autumn 1 - This term in History, Year 2 are learning all about life in London during the later Stuart period (1660 - 1714). We will explore key events such as the Restoration of Charles ll, the Great Plague, the Great Fire of London, the children will explore how Londoners lived, celebrated, suffered and rebuilt their city. We will also study important individuals like Samuel Pepys and Christopher Wren, using diaries, maps and architecture to understand how the past is recorded and remembered.
Autumn 1 - This term in PE, we will be focusing on developing balance, agility and coordination though the topic of gymnastics. Building on the skills taught in Year 1, we will extend our physical abilities and explore sequence building and partner work. The children will explore how to combine actions smoothly, use apparatus safely and evaluate performances using appropriate vocabulary.
Autumn 1 - This term in RE, we will learn about Noah and God’s covenant, shown in the rainbow as a sign of hope and promise. We will explore stewardship, understanding how caring for creation reflects God’s love. We will make connections to the Sacrament of Baptism, where water, oil, a white garment, and light symbolise new life in Christ. We will retell Bible stories, reflect on creation and consider how our choices affect others. The children will develop their understanding of how faith shapes Christian living today.
Autumn 1 - In this Year 2 Music unit, Experimenting with Sounds 2 – Block A, pupils explore Brazilian samba through rhythm, pulse, and ensemble performance. Over five weeks, they play untuned percussion, layer repeating rhythms (ostinati), and follow conducting cues. Pupils compose simple call and response patterns, experiment with crescendo and decrescendo, and perform body percussion. Listening to Sérgio Mendes’ Fanfarra (Cabua-Le-Le), they learn how rhythm, dynamics, and teamwork combine to create the lively energy of samba.
Autumn 1 - This term Year 2 will be deepening their understanding of place value within 100. We will build fluency in counting, reading, writing, and comparing numbers using concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations. We will explore key themes such as grouping into tens and ones, recognising the value of digits, partitioning flexibly, and using number lines to estimate and order numbers. The children will develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills through practical activities, enabling them to explain patterns, compare quantities, and confidently apply place value knowledge across mathematics.
Autumn 1 - In this unit, we will explore A River through reading, discussion, and imaginative writing. The children will learn to recognise descriptive and poetic language, sequence events, and infer meaning from the text. The children will explore different fabrics, use templates to cut shapes, and develop sewing skills such as threading a needle, running stitch, and overstitch. Inspired by designer Kaffe Fassett, the children design and make patchwork pieces using geometric shapes. They evaluate their work, describing how fabrics can be reused creatively and reflect on improving accuracy, neatness, and overall design.
Autumn 1 - This term, we will explore the town of Keswick in the Lake District, learning about its location, landscapes, and mountain environment. The children will identify physical and human features, use maps and aerial photographs, and develop geographical vocabulary. Through creative activities such as mapwork, and comparative studies, children will discover what life is like in a mountain community. The unit builds skills in observation, comparison, and map-reading while fostering curiosity about contrasting global environments.

We will investigate habitats and microhabitats, identifying plants and animals in local and wider environments. The children will build an understanding of how animals and plants depend on each other through food chains, recognising producers, consumers, predators, and prey. They will develop key scientific skills including observing, classifying, questioning, and recording data, fostering curiosity about the natural world and its interconnections.
