Environmental Studies

Autumn

This half term we have really enjoy environmental studies. We have learnt how to be safe around a campfire, Toasted Marshmallows and learnt how to use different tools ready for when we build our own bug house.

Spring

This term year 6 have been planting an orchard as part of our Eco programme that we have running within school. We work as a team to plant different trees, eg. apple, plum, cherry and pear trees.

Y6 D&T

Autumn 1 – This term in DT year 6 will be focusing on food and nutrition looking at making street foods from different cultures. The food pupils are making are burritos, pitta bread and samosas. Year 6 will be thinking about their own diet and snack they eat daily and how they may improve their nutritional value to lead healthy lifestyles. Pupils will be given the opportunity to learn how to cook different cultured foods and how to perform different cutting skills.

Autumn 2 – Pupils will be learning about mechanisms in this term. Pupils will be investigating how pulleys and gears work and will design and make their very own gear product (Car). Year 6 will be able to select and use a variety of modelling materials to be able to create their final outcome. Pupils will research the materials they will need to create their product and will design what each side of the product will look like labelling each picture, explaining why they are using certain material.

Y6 P.S.H.E.

Autumn 1 – This term in PSHE year 6 have been studying about families and safe relationships. We have discussed what positive and negative relationships are and the advantages and disadvantages it can have on relationships and the impact it leaves on different people. We have learnt about different types of relationships that can occur in later life (civil partnerships, marriage, cohabitation). We have also developed our understand in consent and permission and why this is important in every day life.

Autumn 2 – In PSHE this term year 6 have been enhancing their understanding in respecting ourselves and others around us. We have explored how we can respect everyones differences not mater who they are, where they come from or what they look like.

Spring 1 – This term we have discussed what belonging to a community is and how we manage money and work throughout our lives.

Spring 2 – This term we have developed our understanding of how we can keep safe when using different media.

Summer 1 This term in PSHE year 6 are studying health and well-being. We have learnt about different medications that we can take and how to stay safe, making sure we always have an adult with us and permission before taken them. We have also discussed different drugs that there are and the effects these can have on our body, we then acted out different scenarios and showed how we would deal with the situation if we were to ever find ourselves in them (telling the police, not joining in, saying no and not being pressured into doing something you don’t want to do).

Summer 2 – Year 6 have been learning about ourselves, growing and changing and how to keep safe. We have recapped what we have already learnt about puberty and widen our knowledge. We have also studied change within our body and with our emotions and how to become more independent as we get older.

Y6 Spanish

Autumn

Every Thursday we really enjoy our Spanish lessons with Senorita Worrell.

This half term we have been learning about different members of our family, different job that we can work in, within the future.

We have also learnt how to read a clock and how to tell the time in Spanish.

Spring

This term in Spanish we have been learning how to say were we live and what type of house we live in. We have also expanded are sentences by explaining where our house is (countryside, by the beach, in town).

Y6 History

Autumn

Autumn 1 – This term year 6 have been learning about “The Maya” who were founded in Mexico which was known then as Mesoamerica. We have developed an understanding of where the Mayan where from and what types of writing and symbols they used (hieroglyphs). We have enhanced our learning by learning about Lady Xoc and Lord Jaguar and the ritual that they carried out known as bloodletting. We have explained and annotated what mayan gods where like and what they built, looking at how they started ancestors.

Autumn 2 – This term year 6 have been learning about Ethiopia and Benin.

Year 6 will also study black history, where they will research a famous figure discussing what contributions they had, what makes them a significant figure and how they made a difference.

Spring

Y6 Geography

Autumn 1 – This term year 6 have been studying energy and climate change. We have developed our understanding and learning in forming our own opinions of wind power and nuclear power, thinking about the advantages and disadvantages it has on the environment. We have also studied solar power and why this is important moving forward in the next few years. We furthered our learning in the use of petrol and diesel cars and how they can be changed to more electric cars which has more benefits on the environment and causes less harm.

Autumn 2 – This term year 6 have been learning about Ethiopia. We have studied the different living conditions within Ethiopia based on the amount of money each family obtains. We compared this with jobs that families have to allow them to be able to survive which can have many impacts on their lives over the years. We learnt about the time zone between the UK and Ethiopia, the temperate difference and the percentage of people living there.

Spring 1 – This half term year 6 are developing an understanding of changing Birmingham.

Y6 English

Autumn 1 – Year 6 have been learning about ‘Rose Blanche’ where we have been writing our very own diary entry based on a young girl and how she was affected by WWII. We have developing our understanding of different techniques required to write a diary. We have explored many different writing techniques for example informal/formal vocabulary, antonyms and synonyms, semi colons and colons to introduce a list. We have also written a bravery award speech for ‘Rose Blanche’ based on her amazing life discussing where she lived and how she overcome her fears to show how she wanted to make a difference to others in her community.

Autumn 2 -This term we have been studying the book ‘A Story Like The Wind’ by Gill Lewis. By reading the book ‘The Story Like The Wind’ it has helped us to write our own flash back narrative. We have looked at different language features, writers hints and different transitions which take us from the past to the present tense. We have also written a newspaper report. To help us with our newspaper we have taken part in a hot seat were we interviewed eyewitnesses, government officials and interviewees. We have researched different aspects of a newspaper and answered questions about the text.

Spring 1 – The book we are immersing ourselves into this half term is ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin. We are exploring the vocabulary used within the vehicle text/model text. Pupils are developing their knowledge and understanding on different techniques used that can be applied to their own discovery narrative at the end of the unit. We have explored the different animals Charles Darwin meets with the story, researching were these animals come from, there behaviours and movements and listing their features.

Summer 2 – Year 6 have been immersing themselves into the age old fairy tale of ‘Hansel & Gretel’. After reading the story this allowed us to be able to produce our very own dual narrative and persuasive letters based on the story for different characters (mothers, fathers, Hansel & Gretel or the Old Lady).

Y6 Computing

Autumn 1 – In computing this term year 6 will be looking at different scenarios they may come across when being online. We will discuss how we would report online activity that should not be happening online from different social medias sites. Pupils will create a storyboard and will act them out filming what we would do if we were faced with these situations.

Autumn 2 – Pupils will be creating their own version of the popular app Crosby roads. Year 6 will be learning and using visual coding which will allow them to be able to move their characters within the app to get from one place to another.

Spring 1 – This half term pupils have been exploring virtual reality(VR) and understanding what this term means. We discovered that virtual reality is the ability to make people feel like they are actually somewhere else. We have explored how this can be used within our classroom to help us build our very own VR world. We enjoyed creating our own VR character and setting.

Spring 2 –

Year 6 have developed and deepened their knowledge and understanding of the risks of being online. They have gained skills when using and researching online services that are available. Pupils have taken part in class discussions relating to certain situations and discussed issues they may arise when being online and how it can affect people in different ways.

Summer 1 – be producing their own digital guide to being a maths genus. Pupils will be making videos and different animations showing other people how to solve various maths problems.

Y6 Art

Autumn 1 – In art this term year 6 have been looking at the artist Frida Kahlo who focused her artwork around self portraits using colours to portray her emotions. Year 6 have been using and applying their knowledge of technique into their drawings using scale and proportion. They produced a self portrait of themselves and created a surreal background that represented symbols that meant things to them.

Autumn 2 – In art this term year 6 have been focusing their learning on painting and collage basing their work and research around the artist Pablo Picasso. They have been developing their understanding of overlapping, using different materials (paint, tissue paper, coloured pens/pencils and felt) to create different types of collages. We have been exploring many different techniques and using this through our use of different tones and tints.

Spring 1 – This half term we are focusing on the British artist Patrick Hughes. We have explored how to create an optical illusion of a three dimensional shape on a flat surface. To help us to create this artwork we have used a viewfinder to focus closely of one area of an image, we have created an optical illusion from one vanishing point. We then looked at the perspective of the object we were including make image closer to us bigger and images further away from us smaller.

Spring 2 – The artist we have studied this half term is Dale Chihuly who is an American glass sculptor and entrepreneur. We have created a 3D form using a wide range of techniques developed across different art units. We had to consider and think about the use of different colours, patterns and texture that could be combined together to create a 3D structures.
