Mainstream Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and Inclusion
At Our Lady and St Swithin’s Catholic Primary School, we know that all children are unique and develop at different rates. Many of our pupils may experience barriers to their learning and require additional support during their time at school and beyond. We are committed to ensuring that children with SEND are fully included in the many wonderful opportunities available within our school community.
We are a fully inclusive school and strive to ensure that every child is challenged and supported to reach their full potential through access to a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum. We achieve this by applying the graduated approach, working closely with parents and carers, and most importantly, by listening to our children.
Our staff prioritise high-quality teaching for all pupils, underpinned by the Education Endowment Foundation’s report on special educational needs in mainstream schools and the ‘five-a-day’ principles, which highlight how effective teaching strategies can benefit children with SEND.
The Graduated Approach at Our Lady and St Swithin’s
“A pupil has SEN where their learning difficulty or disability calls for special educational provision, namely provision different from or additional to that normally available to pupils of the same age.”
Section 6.15, SEND Code of Practice (2015)
Where children are identified through staff observations, assessments, and discussions with parents as needing additional support, we implement the Graduated Approach in line with the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years (2015). This is a continuous monitoring cycle, where we identify a child’s strengths and barriers, plan appropriate support, and review the progress made. This process is known as the Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) Cycle.
Through the application of the APDR cycle, children are supported at the correct level for their individual needs.

An Education, Health and Care plan (“EHC plan”) is a legal document which describes a child or young person’s special educational needs, the support they need, and the outcomes they would like to achieve.
The special educational provision described in an EHC plan must be provided by the child or young person’s local authority (“LA”). This means an EHC plan can give a child or young person extra educational support. It can also give parents and young people more choice about which school or other setting the child or young person can attend.
An EHC plan can only be issued after a child or young person has gone through the process of an Education, Health and Care needs assessment.
