Welcome to Year 5!

We are Mrs Blacklock and Miss Burns, and we are so excited to share the Year 5 journey with your child. This year brings a whole new adventure, with plenty of opportunities to grow in confidence, become more independent and discover just how much we are capable of achieving.

In Year 5, our classroom is a happy, positive and welcoming place where everyone feels valued and ready to learn. We will encourage each other, celebrate our successes and remember that making mistakes, persevering and trying again are all important parts of learning.

Throughout the year, the children will build on everything they have already learned while taking on new challenges, developing new skills and enjoying lots of exciting experiences together. We hope to inspire curiosity, encourage children to believe in themselves and, most importantly, make Year 5 a year filled with learning, laughter and memories.

We are really looking forward to working closely with you and supporting your child throughout their Year 5 journey. Please keep an eye on our class page for important updates, useful information and a glimpse of all the wonderful things we have been getting up to in class.

PE Days – Wednesday and Thursday

Homework – Homework packs are sent home every Thursday and should be completed and returned the following week.

Reading Books – Reading books are sent home weekly and must be brought back into school every Thursday, ready to be changed.

Homework Menus – Homework menus are sent home termly.

Y5 D&T

Autumn - This term year 5 are looking at food and nutrition. Our main focus is discovering “Why are our diets different?” We explored different types of bread and where they originated from. This it is readiness for when we cook our own flatbread.

Y5 Art

Autumn - In art this term year 5 have been looking at the artist Hundertwasser. We have researched about all the different types of artwork he had made, which are very colour and vivid. From this research it has helped us to be able to create one of our own pieces or recreate one of Hundertwasser pieces of art.

Y5 English

Autumn - This term in English we have been reading the book ‘The Mars Rover’. The Mars Rover is a Robot that was built by scientists and engineers and sent to Mars to explore and provide opportunities. This provided an exciting mission to explore Mars. Children then used their knowledge of ‘The Mars Rover’ to write their own Space Narrative and Mission Log, focusing on features like prefixes, expanded noun phrase, dashes for parenthesis.

Y5 P.S.H.E.

Autumn - In PSHE this term year 5 are looking at families and relationships. We are learning about families and why are families special? Are there different types of families?

Friendships- peer influences. Safe relationships- physical contact and how to keep safe.

Y5 Spanish

Autumn - In Spanish this term year 5 have been learning about our family members, different colours and different types of clothing that we wear.

Y5 Music

This term in music year 5 have been music composers and have been learning how to product their own songs. We have a Ukelele teacher who comes in to teach us how to play the Ukelele. We have also explore all the different musical language and what all of the words mean.

Y5 History

Autumn - In history year 5 have studied The Round City of Baghdad. We've explored where and how it was built, who built it, why did he build it, why it is important to understand medieval Islam and how Islamic scholars preserved learning tools. We have explored different key individuals and how the past is constructed from a range of sources.

Y5 Maths

Autumn - In maths this term we are learning about number and place value. We have looked at roman numerals, comparing and ordering numbers to one million, Rounding to the nearest 100 and counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s. We have found using place value charts, number lines and other resources very valuable.

Y5 Geography

Autumn - In Geography this term we have been studying Why is California so thirsty? We have studied the Water Cycle and the different aspect of it. Here are some key words we have learnt: precipitation, evaportation, condensation, ground water. We have discussed why do we need water and what can the effect be if we do not have water? We are continuing to look at Drought, water supply, farming, crops, almonds.

Y5 Computing

Autumn - This term in computing year 5 have been looking at Variables. We have a computing teacher who comes in to teach us all about variables. We have particularly enjoyed using scratch.

Y5 PE

Autumn - In PE we are developing our knowledge and skills in gymnastics. We are enhancing our learning by learning new skills that can be added to our previous learning in year 4. We have performed different jumps and movements, Symmetrical and Asymmetrical shapes, counter balances in pairs and in groups and performed are our short routines.

Y5 RE

In RE, we are exploring Creation and Covenant. We have been learning about the story of Creation and Covenant focusing on Moses and the burning bush, thinking about how God called Moses and the special relationship between God and His people. We have also explored the Ten Commandments and how they were given to guide people in how to live, love God and care for one another.
