ARC 1 follows the Equals Pre-Formal Curriculum, which is carefully designed for pupils who learn best through practical, sensory, and highly personalised experiences. The curriculum focuses on developing the essential foundations for learning by supporting pupils in the following areas:
Engagement in learning
Communication
Sensory exploration
Early cognitive development
Emotional regulation
The development of the foundational skills needed for future learning
Learning opportunities are tailored to each child's individual strengths, interests, and needs, allowing them to progress at their own pace within a nurturing and supportive environment.
To monitor and celebrate your child's progress, pupils working within the Pre-Formal pathway are assessed using the B Squared Engagement Model. This assessment framework captures the small but significant steps children make through five key areas of engagement:
Exploration – showing curiosity and investigating people, objects, or activities.
Realisation – recognising cause and effect and understanding that their actions have an impact.
Anticipation – predicting familiar events or routines and responding to what comes next.
Persistence – maintaining focus and continuing with an activity despite challenges.
Initiation – independently beginning interactions, activities, or communication.Children are assessed throughout the year via Earwig Academic Timelines.
Earwig is an online system that our school uses to record learning and progress. Teachers add photos, videos and notes about what your child has been doing in class. These are organised into a timeline so you can see their journey over time.
As a parent, you will be invited to see your child's academic timeline during parent evening sessions where you can celebrate achievements, and see how they are getting on at school.
We have PE on a Tuesday morning where children will engage in physical activity both in their classroom and in the school hall.
