Public Sector Equality Duty

At Our Lady & St Swithin’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and respect for all members of our school community. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, we are committed to meeting our Public Sector Equality Duty to:

  1. Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under the Equality Act 2010.

  2. Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not, ensuring that all pupils, staff, parents, carers and members of our wider community have fair and equal opportunities to succeed.

  3. Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not, promoting understanding, respect, tolerance and positive relationships throughout our school community.

As a Catholic school, we seek to uphold the dignity and uniqueness of every individual, recognising that every person is created in the image and likeness of God. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone is valued, respected and supported to flourish.

Equality Objectives

Our Lady & St Swithin’s Catholic Primary School is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and ensuring equality of provision for every member of our school community. We recognise the uniqueness and dignity of every individual and strive to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their background or circumstances, are valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential.

Our Equality Objectives are to:

  • Promote cultural awareness, diversity and understanding by providing pupils with a rich range of experiences, both within school and through opportunities in the wider community.

  • Challenge prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes and promote greater understanding, respect and inclusion for people with disabilities and those with other protected characteristics.

  • Promote equality of achievement by monitoring and addressing any differences in the attainment and progress of boys and girls and ensuring that all pupils are supported to reach their full potential.

  • Provide equitable access to enrichment opportunities, including after-school clubs, sporting activities, educational visits and wider school experiences, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to participate.

  • Ensure equal access to information and communication for all parents and carers, taking account of individual needs and removing barriers to effective engagement with school.

  • Provide an inclusive and age-appropriate curriculum which reflects our Catholic values and supports pupils' understanding of relationships, respect, dignity, personal responsibility and the importance of treating others with kindness and compassion.

  • Ensure that the school environment is accessible and inclusive for all pupils, staff, parents, carers and visitors, making reasonable adjustments where necessary to remove barriers to participation.

  • Prepare pupils for life in modern Britain and the next stage of their education, developing their understanding of equality, diversity, democracy, respect and responsibility while promoting our Catholic mission and values.

  • Promote a culture of respect, dignity and belonging, ensuring that every child is valued as a unique individual, created in the image and likeness of God.

Prejudice-Related Incidents

Our Lady & St Swithin’s Catholic Primary School has a zero-tolerance approach to prejudice, discrimination, harassment and victimisation in any form.

Whether behaviour is direct or indirect, any form of discrimination towards a member of our school community will be taken seriously. We are committed to responding promptly and appropriately to any reported incident. Through clear reporting, recording and follow-up procedures, we will ensure that concerns are investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action is taken. Our response will be fair, proportionate and firm, with the wellbeing and safety of those involved at the centre of our approach.

As a Catholic school, we promote the dignity and uniqueness of every person, recognising that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. Through our curriculum, relationships and daily school life, pupils are encouraged to understand and respect differences and to value every member of our diverse community.

Our pupils will be encouraged to:

We will ensure that any decisions relating to organisational change or redundancy are made fairly, transparently and without direct or indirect discrimination. Similarly, all disciplinary, capability and grievance procedures will be implemented consistently, fairly and without prejudice.

Any concerns relating to discrimination, harassment, victimisation or unfair treatment will be taken seriously and addressed promptly through the appropriate school procedures.
